Keeping the Village clean & tidy

Please can we remind all dog owners of the need to clean up after your dogs have performed their daily business ... especially if it is in front of someone's house or where children play! Furthermore it is very unpleasant for the folk who cut the village grass to have to stop and remove it. Not least it is an offence which attracts a significant fine!

Please think about your fellow villagers ....

Beware tack thieves are operating in the area

Please check the security on your tack rooms and outbuildings.

A nearby workshop was burgled a few nights ago.

It is thought that they were targeting tack, they will take anything else they can lift such rugs, lawnmowers, strimmers, tools etc - even the heat lamp off some chicks! (alas 1 died).

The police say they are targeting the area. They will even take the rugs off horse's backs in the field.

Please circulate this warning and check your security.

Many thanks

From Community Police

"Dear All,

We seem to be getting alot of interest from Irish persons arriving in vans trying to flog electrical goods such as generators, power tools etc. Two vans recently on Irish plates 07-C-12449 and 08-C-8856. Do not be tempted as the goods although not normally stolen will be of incredibly poor quality and not worth anything like the asking price!"

House Break-In

This is an important notice to warn you that one house in the village may have been entered by would-be burglars on 25th March and to remind you to make sure that all of your doors and windows are locked when you go out. It is thought that they may have been disturbed before they were able to take anything valuable. However they have been in the village and may return.

The police are fully aware of the situation and advise all villagers to be especially vigilant. Please call the police immediatley if you see anything suspicious going on in the village.

Thank you.

.

Here is the latest Police Bulletin from PC Pete Jung from the Chalk Valley Neighbourhood Police Team

Dear All,

I have had 2 recent reports of a white van believed to be a VW Transporter in the area. There are two Irish males on board and are trying to sell Power Tools from the back of it.

This is a fairly common occurrence these days and normally they are cheap imports being sold on at top of the range prices. There is of course the possibility that they are stolen. They will normally try to sell to tradesmen working at an address or Farms rather than to the home owner but I wouldn't put it passed them!

I have been given 2 registrations YT 07 YKX and YT 07 YKK - neither relate to a VW so it could be that the vehicle is stolen too.

Thanks,
PC Pete

Thieves in the Area

Verena reports that over the past few months she has had problems with numerous thefts from where she keeps her horses (just on the left off Burcombe lane as you leave the village heading to Wilton). They have even broken into her car as she has attended to the horses.

The culprits could easily target any of us in the village. All they need is the opportunity to pinch something that is left unattended and suitably tempting.

Verena has asked if we could warn other villagers about these thieves who are operating in the area and to be vigilant. Please keep an eye open for any unusual activity, strange cars or suspicious people hanging around - especially by her field or near to her yard by the last property at the other end of the village (towards Barford).

The only cars which should be parked outside either area are her cars which are a red Ford Mondeo and a small white Citroen van, which has 'Kas Plant Hire' on it.

Please make a note of any other vehicles (the make, model, colour, registration, time, description of strangers, etc) however brief their stay might be ... and let Verena know. She can be contacted on 01722 336262 ext 4414 daytimes or 07786485825 evenings and a message can be left on the mobile.

Or email us the details at burcombebugle@hotmail.com and we can pass them on ... or call the police.

Verena is very worried for the safety of her horses and would be very grateful to Burcombe villagers for their support and vigilance.

Thank you.

Please can we also ask the parents of children living in the village, to remind their children that horses can be dangerous and not to go into the field with them at anytime.

Dear All,

Across the Division we are having a sharp rise in car thefts. I believe
that it is in the main a group of yobs pinching cars to joy ride them.
We are finding that once a car has run out of petrol it is dumped and
then another nearby is stolen. The group of whoever is doing this
favours the older car as they are easier to break into and hot wire.
Some of the cars have even been stolen from people's drives so they are
quite brazen in their efforts. Just for your info especially if you are
the owner of an older car, maybe an idea to block it in with a second
vehicle or park it out of view if possible (eg a garage). The offences
are being investigated by a team of officers in Salisbury as this series
has been across the Division. I must emphasise that the likelihood of
this happening to you is extremely rare. I have had several comments
that my e-mails are making some of you paranoid which I can assure you is not the intention!! As they say fore warned is fore armed................

Regards, PC Pete

25 July 2007

Dear All,

A while back I went around the village to ask what was the main concern
that residents had. The overwhelming majority was in relation to
speeding vehicles. To address this I had a device put down across the
main road which measured volume and speed of vehicles. This was done
between 20/3/07 and 27/3/07. The results showed that the average speed
was 27.8 mph of all vehicles. The total number of vehicles that passed
over the device was 5004. This sounds a lot but in comparison to other
villages is very small. (It averages at 29 vehicles per hour) As such
the Camera Unit are not able to visit the village as it falls below
their threshold limits.

I then had the Speed Indicator Device put out in June which showed the
drivers the speed they were doing. This proved to be a an effective tool
and I received several positive comments from residents. Unfortunately
the demand for this item is high across the board and has to be moved
around the whole county.

I have also carried out some enforcement with the use of a laser
machine. I have spent 8 hours (in addition to foot patrols) doing these
checks and during this time I have cautioned only 6 drivers and issued 1
ticket.

Hopefully you will agree that I have addressed the concerns as much as I
can and at this stage I would have say that there is little more I can
do. I have absolutely no doubt that there are one or two idiots who
thrash through the village in a dangerous manner but sadly this is the
case for all villages and towns. Whilst there are cars on the road this
will always be the case.

I have discussed the idea of having some form of road calming scheme
with several people and I feel that this is perhaps something the Parish
Council may wish to take up. In my opinion this is far more effective
than anything else as it is there 24 hours a day where as me and my gun
are only effective for the time that I am there! If this is something
that would be considered by the Council then I would obviously give it
my full support.

I have requested that this be publicised via The Bugle for those who are
not on e-mail.

All the best.

PC Pete Jung - Burcombe Beat Officer.

May 2007

"This month we would like to remind you of the benefits of Neighbourhood Watch.

This is one of the biggest and most successful crime prevention initiatives ever and literally means bringing communities together to take action, cutting local crime and at the same time adding to a sense of security, knowing that your neighbours are keeping an eye on your property.

Traditionally Neighbourhood Watch activity has focused on the immediate vicinity of homes and can involve just a few houses or larger estates. Local co coordinators for the scheme are volunteers who would like to be a point of contact for us and for their neighbours. Being a member of a scheme has the added benefit of a reduction in house insurance.

Good communication is essential to the effectiveness of the scheme and we intend to put out bulletins as and when we receive information that is relevant to your community. These bulletins will be put out via email to members who can then pass the word on to neighbours. Alternatively, if you do not have email, but would prefer to receive bulletins via a telephone cascade system, then let us know. Information can be passed back to us by contacting us on the links below.

If you are interested in finding out more about Neighbourhood Watch or need to contact us, our number is 0845 408 7000 and enter extension number 747 442 when prompted. This number will take you directly to our office and you can leave a message if we are not available.

Alternatively, contact us by e-mail at peter.jung@wiltshire.pnn.police.uk or beverley.richards@wiltshire.pnn.police.uk

In an emergency dial 999"

Thanks Pete and Beverley for your continuing support and hard work - from Burcombe.info and the Burcombe Bugle.

A Very Queer Cartographical Error

www.wiltshire.gov.uk
It was a matter of pride among English cartographers that they always did their own mapping and did not copy earlier maps.

The cartographer, John Speed, mapped Wiltshire within a dozen miles of Salisbury in 1662. The village of Burcombe was on either side of what is now the A30. John Speed called the part to the south, Burcombe. Because he did not know the name of the north side, he simply wrote on the map, "Query".

It so happens that if you look at any Wiltshire map made from then onwards until 1775, the word "Query" still appeared to the north of the road, even though English cartographers said that they never copied earlier maps made by other people, there are at least a dozen examples of this mistake.

Thanks to our new 'Historical Correspondent' Will!
